When removal is genuinely necessary

Removal is expensive and it is oversold in this trade. It is necessary when the material is wet, when it is contaminated with droppings or nesting, when it has been compressed flat and lost its R-value, or when we cannot inspect the ceiling plane and seal it properly with the old material in the way. It is not necessary simply because the insulation is old.

If the existing insulation is dry, clean and undisturbed, we blow over it. The depth adds up, the job is cheaper, and the landfill is smaller.

How a removal is contained

The hatch is sealed into a containment, the route is covered, and the attic is put under negative pressure so air moves into the attic and out through the hose, not down into the house. The material is vacuumed directly to a truck rather than carried through the hallway in bags. When the vacuum stops, the surfaces are cleaned and an antimicrobial is applied.

Then — and this is the step people skip — whatever let the animals or the water in gets closed. Re-insulating over an open soffit gap is paying twice.

Does removal affect the rebate?

The attic rebate is calculated on the insulation upgrade, and the tier is set by the depth that was there before. Removal is part of the invoice, which matters because the rebate is capped at half the invoice — so on a removal-plus-reinsulation job the cap is rarely the binding constraint.
